‘Little Fockers’ DVD extra: Robert De Niro opens up about his ‘Meet the Parents’ character

little-fockers-deniro-stiller.jpg“Little Fockers,” the third installment in the “Meet the Parents” franchise, is set to be released on Blu-ray and DVD April 5th. In it, Robert De Niro reprises his role as the overbearing patriarch Jack Byrnes.

In this DVD bonus feature -E! Online, De Niro sits down with Ben Stiller and revisits the past 10 years with the series.

“With this character, I can try things that I normally wouldn’t try with another character because it would seem crazy to do,” he says. “So that, in itself, is more freeing in a way and you can have more fun doing things.”

Stiller recalls his reaction to the initial suggestion of the iconic actor for the part.

“‘Yeah, Robert De Niro. That would be great,’” he said at the time. “‘Good luck with that.’”

The role was definitely something new for the “Goodfellas” actor, who entered into the comedy with an open mind.

“‘Let’s do it. Why not?’” he remembers. “‘I’ll try it.’”

And for that, we thank the man. It’s hard to picture anyone else pulling off such a flawless Jack Byrnes. Watch the clip below.

‘Fantastic Four’ to kill off a ‘core character’ in the new year

fantastic-four-583.jpgJan. 26, 2011 will be a memorable day for comic book fans and a really bad one for a certain member of the Marvel Comics family.

With Issue No. 587, the current “Fantastic Four” storyline, “Three,” will conclude and according to - that Marvel executive editor Tom Brevoort gave CNN, “A core character from the series, whom you’ve seen in the [2005 and 2007] films, will be no more.”

Don’t get your hopes up that they’re going to pull a fast one though and kill off Victor Von Doom, aka Dr. Doom, even if he was in both the films.

“The hook is the fact that one of the four characters will be shuffling off this mortal coil. That’s really a small part,” Brevorrt says. “What we’re actually doing is completely transmogrifying the ‘FF’ as a thing. At the end of this story, there won’t even be a book called ‘Fantastic Four’ anymore; there will be something new that will be interesting and exciting. Out of this moment, a new thing will be born.”

That new thing is called “FF” and will premiere in March.

So whose number is up? Sue Storm? Her brother Johnny? Reed Richards? Or poor, beleaguered Ben “The Thing” Grimm?

Captain Awesome: Douglas Allen Smith Jr. changes name to honor ‘Chuck’ character

captain-awesome-smiley.jpgWe think this is pretty awesome.

Douglas Allen Smith Jr., an unemployed legally changed his name to Captain Awesome in November, and already his life is changing for the “awesomer,” - the Washington Post.

How? Well, uh, news stories like this one are being written about him. We don’t doubt that he’ll make it on TV soon. If he plays his cards right, he might meet the actual Captain Awesome.

For non- - fans, “Captain Awesome” is the nickname of Dr. Devon Woodcomb, played with good-natured panache by -. He’s handsome, in shape, saves lives and is an all around admirable guy. Not a bad person to model your life after. Devon’s dad had given him the nickname because “poor nickname builds good character.”

This is not the former Smith’s only awesome idea. Since the name pretty much speaks for itself, he felt he didn’t need the redundancy of a real signature. A Lane County judge, who after determining the name change wasn’t for fraudulent reasons, has granted Smith permission to use a picture instead: right pointing arrow, smiley face, left pointing arrow (pictured above).

The only place he can’t use it is at the bank because they deemed it too easy to forge.

Kudos to the new Captain Awesome. We wonder if he’s single and if he’s okay being that way for a while. If he’s married, well, uh, mazel tov to Mrs. Awesome.

Captain Awesome brings to mind another great fictional character who inspired a name change. The former Scott Nall, a National Guardsman, -, leader of the Autobots in “The Transformers.”
