E!’s hit new series “After Lately” ends its first season this Sunday (Apr. 23) with guest appearances by -, - and Dr. Drew. Fans of the “ridiculous morons” behind the show, including Heather McDonald, needn’t worry about withdrawal just yet.
McDonald and crew will continue to make regular appearances on “Chelsea Lately” in addition to being featured in her new book, “The Lies Chelsea Handler Told Me,” and subsequent comedy tour.
McDonald has another project up her sleeve, as well. The “Lately” producer recently filmed a pilot alongside roundtable regular (and one-time guest host) Ross Matthews for E!, in which the duo give their unique and hilarious perspective on entertainment news.
“It’s like ‘The Daily 10,’ but being really funny with opinions. But it is all humor based,” the funny lady tells -.
“And then we have little segments too within the half hour. It would
either be every night like ‘Chelsea’ or it could also be once a week.”
“We would maybe have a guest once in a while, but I don’t think it would
be a staple of the show,” she adds. “It’s basically just Ross and I and
our chemistry. Being funny and being super fans of pop culture and
giving our opinions on it”
McDonald tells -that the show would be called “Love or Hate” and that filming went very well. They expect to hear back from the network in May.
In the meantime, McDonald is still hard at work for E!’s late night
comedy staple, “Chelsea Lately.” As part of her duties, McDonald often
partakes in sketches which mock the Bravo mega-franchise “The Real Housewives.” Pal Vicki Gunvalson
made a guest appearance in an episode of “After Lately,” so we were
curious whether it’s sometimes awkward to make fun of her friends on TV.
“You know, the only way it’s weird is Jill Zarin keeps e-mailing
me begging us to do them,” McDonald jokes. “She’s like ‘What, you don’t
love me? Aren’t you gonna spoof me? It’s Jill Zarin! Do me! Do me with
my dog Ginger.” Text simply doesn’t do the Zarin impression justice — watch the video below to get the full effect.
Citing “Real Housewives” as a huge guilty pleasure, the comedienne and
author admits that she struck up an unlikely friendship with the Kardashian-Jenner clan long before her days at E!.
“I met them through ['Good Day LA' host] Jillian Barberie Reynolds. she
was doing the ice skating show with Bruce,” McDonald explains of the
2006 FOX reality program “Skating with Celebrities.”
“They actually… keep their friends,” she dishes on the family. “You go
to their parties and it’s all the same people that were there 4 years
ago… They’re not like, star F-ers at all. They don’t have to be! There
are so many of them, they don’t need to have many outside friends.”
McDonald was even one of a select number of friends to be invited to Khloé Kardashian‘s nuptials to LA Laker Lamar Odom.
“It was a gorgeous wedding, but it felt like a normal wedding,” she
explains of the hyped event. “It wasn’t the most ridiculous, spectacular
wedding I’ve ever been to. It was nice, there was food and walk around
apps and a DJ, but it wasn’t like million dollar — I mean, maybe it was
a million dollars — but… it still felt really intimate and normal”
Despite it’s “normal” feel, the wedding was anything but. The stars of
the new E! hit “Khloé and Lamar” got engaged after a brief six-week
courtship, with their wedding following only days later.
“I was surprised,” McDonald says of the whirlwind romance. “I felt like
honestly, when they were dancing, I felt like they didn’t really know
each other. But obviously it works.” Adding that, “It was cute and it
was fun… Of course I was thrilled to be invited. I mean come on, who
wouldn’t be.”
You can see more from our interview with McDonald in the video below,
including the story of why she was formerly convinced that co-worker Brad Wollack was gay. Yet again, there’s a pretty spot-on impression that follows.
